About Chak Wai Leung (1942-2021)
Chak Wai Leung photographed Hong Kong across decades with a naturalistic realism that embraced life as it was. Whether his subjects were daily city life, grassroots communities, structures, animals, or nature, he applied a stillness shaped by his passion for Chinese calligraphy, artefacts, and antiquities. Working primarily in black and white, he captured candid, intimate moments on public streets without judgment or social commentary. This openness allowed the rawness of his subjects, who were often going about their own daily lives, to emerge with honesty and respect. Thus, his photography offers an important gateway back to the lived experience of Hong Kong in transition, combining formal restraint with human warmth.
